Simili is built by educators, for educators. We understand the trust schools and families place in educational technology, and we take that responsibility seriously. Protecting student privacy is not just a legal obligation—it's core to who we are.
Simili is designed to be compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Information We Collect
From Students
When students use Simili, we collect only the information necessary to provide our educational services:
- Voice recordings of student responses during math practice sessions
- Transcriptions of student explanations and reasoning
- Student responses and interactions with math problems
- Progress data related to learning objectives
We do not collect personal information directly from students. Student accounts are created and managed by teachers or school administrators.
From Teachers and Schools
When teachers or school administrators sign up for Simili, we collect:
- Name and email address
- School and district information
- Grade levels taught
- Role (teacher, administrator, etc.)
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect solely for educational purposes:
- To provide personalized math tutoring and support to students
- To identify misconceptions and provide appropriate scaffolding
- To generate reports for teachers about student understanding
- To improve our educational content and teaching approaches
- To communicate with teachers and administrators about their accounts
What We Don't Do
We believe in being clear about what we will never do with student data:
- No advertising: We do not display advertisements to students or use student data for advertising purposes
- No selling data: We do not sell, rent, or trade student personal information to any third party
- No profiling for non-educational purposes: We do not create profiles of students for purposes other than supporting their education
- No third-party tracking: We do not allow third-party advertising or tracking in our student-facing products
Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect student data:
- Data is encrypted in transit and at rest
- Access to student data is limited to authorized personnel
- We regularly review and update our security practices
- We use secure, reputable cloud infrastructure providers
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain student data only for as long as necessary to provide our educational services. Schools and teachers can request deletion of student data at any time by contacting us.
When a school's contract ends, we will delete all associated student data within 60 days unless the school requests otherwise in writing.
Parental Rights
Parents have the right to:
- Review their child's personal information
- Request deletion of their child's personal information
- Refuse further collection of their child's information
To exercise these rights, parents should contact their child's school or teacher, who can then work with us to fulfill these requests.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify schools and teachers of any material changes via email and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
